Paper conservation
Invented in China in 105 A.D. paper slowly moved westward and made its first appearance in Europe in the 13th century. It gradually replaced parchment as a writing material and facilitated the spread of the printed word.
Paper is the quiet recipient of human expressions, thought and art; it is to date the major record holder of our daily business, policy and law making.
We conserve paper documents and artefacts with treatments including but not limited to
- Washing, stain reduction, deacidification
- Iron gall ink corrosion treatment
- Leafcasting, paper pulp consolidation of heavily damaged and mouldy documents
