Guidelines on appropriate keeping of  your archives or book collection

On these pages you will find storage advice of archival material, maps, prints and books after some general advice below.

With regards to climate and light the storage area should be chosen with consideration where risks of excess dryness and dampness are minimal. Basements are to be avoided where the risk of flooding are likely. Attics and south facing rooms are also best avoided, unless these are well insulated. The influence of sunlight can cause a dry and warm environment. Moreover with the change of season and sunlight, the climate in these areas changes, inflicting unnecessary strain on documents.

With good storage comes good housekeeping. Storage areas, shelves, cabinets and drawers should be kept dust free. Dust is an attraction to moulds, insects and eventually rodents. With regular dusting and hoovering these threats are kept to a minimum. Inspect ‘hidden’ corners and also dust shelves behind the books.
